Re and Regina of the Italian Festival
The Re (Italian for "king") and Regina (Italian for
"queen") are chosen by a committee each year, from among the hundreds
of Italian families living in McAlester or Krebs (a small adjoining community
which was the center of the Italian immigration here in the late 19th and early
20th century.
The honoured couple is "crowned" on the main stageas part of the
Opening Ceremony of the Italian Festival, with the coronation performed in the
Italian language. The announcement of the identities is made a few weeks before
the Festival, in the local newspaper (McAlester News-Capital &
Democrat).
The Re and Regina from the previous year's Festival also ride in the
convertible automobile or float representing the Italian Festival in the annual
Armed Forces Day Parade (held in early May, before the traditional nationwide
date, in downtown McAlester).
